Choosing the Right Domain Name
Choosing
the right domain name can make the difference between
success and failure of your business' website. As the
rate at which domain names are being bought up is set
to increase exponentially in the next two years - the
quicker you can make a decision and purchase, the better.
Although millions of domains have already been bought
there are expected to be ten times as many unavailable
names within the next two to five years.
Choosing the domain name or hosting address of your business is not a matter to be entered into lightly. Getting the right domain name can make the difference
between attracting thousands of visitors or being lost in the sea of other sites competing for attention.
A key factor in choosing your domain should be size - the shorter and snappier the better. The best domain names are those that are easily remembered. Try
to avoid using hyphens or words that could be easily misspelled.
Reinforce Your Business' Selling Point
Remember that visual stimuli will remain in people's
minds longer that textual ones - the more powerful examples
of companies that realise this link include the Internet
bank Smile. Their combined use of the word "smile" and
their logo is an excellent example of reinforcing your
domain name and business with potential customers. Domain
names that enable your company to have an image or logo
that links with it are not easy to come by, especially
those that attempt to link the domain name with your
company's trading name.
Don't be afraid to get creative when it comes to your domain name. You may find it more successful if your company is called "Smith the Bakers Ltd." to
have the domain www.bakedfresh.com as opposed to www.smiththebakers.com. Seek to foster associations between your company's unique selling point and the domain name you decide upon.
Which extension?
Where possible purchase a ".com" domain unless a more regional focus is relevant for your business. You should also think carefully about buying additional domain
names which people may attempt to use to find your company. Each domain name you buy can be set up to "forward" visitors to your main ".com" address, if
this is to be your chosen extension. The vast majority of Internet users will try a ".com" address before any other when searching for websites online.
